In the U.S.A. the eleventh of September is written as 9/11, and 911 is the number to dial for the emergency services. ( In Bible numerology, 9 signifies finality and 11 signifies disorder, disintegration and judgment ) This has reinforced the opinion held by many that the terrorist attack on the twin towers of the World Trade Center was a wake-up call to America and the Western world.

The Al-Qa'eda network of Osama bin Laden was blamed . He has now declared "Holy War" on the U.S.A. and on the "Jewish -Christian Crusade against Islam". (reported 25th September 2001). The president of the U.S.A. swiftly promised to deploy the might of America to hit back at the terrorists. An alliance was formed to combat terrorism, including Arab nations known to be connected with terrorism ( for fear of bringing them into the conflict on the other side). Israel was excluded; the country with most to fear from Islamic terror!
Is the West willing to give thought to this wake-up call? The signs are not encouraging.
Are we Christians awake as to the significance of these events ? Jesus said, "When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near." (Luke 21 v28) Are we ready to help those who may heed this wake-up call and seek after salvation through Jesus? Are our lamps ready? ( see Wedding )
Who will forget the images on our televisions on September the eleventh 2001 ?

On the evening of September 11th, when the world had been saturated with the horrific images of the attack, reporters had already started playing down the rejoicing of Palestinians which had been clearly visible to the viewer. Orla Guerin, for the BBC, repeatedly used the phrase, "I think" to tell us she believed that ordinary Palestinians were not pleased by what had happened and were at home praying that it would not involve them. Surely the purpose of reporters is to report what has happened, not to make excuses for evil and deny the evidence just presented. A subsequent survey of Palestinians revealed, that one in four believe terrorism against the USA is consistent with Islamic law, that the vast majority oppose the US attacks on Afghanistan, and that the majority oppose Arafat's ceasefire in Israel.
Incidentally, footage of rejoicing in East Jerusalem obtained by a Palestinian cameraman was confiscated and destroyed. An A.P. cameraman got his footage out but received death threats for revealing the truth. This footage has not been aired much and has since been denied by an Islamic representative on the Dimbleby programme.
The Editor of Al Quds ( an Arabic newspaper ) was interviewed and said, "The United States must consider why its foreign policy is so hated throughout the Middle East". His comments gave the first hint that the Arabs should be placated; without mentioning Palestine.

One month later, where did we stand ?
The USA and allies were well into attacking Afghanistan with repeated heavy bombing, with the usual TV reports of civilian casualties.
With no obvious connection with events, the alliance is talking of the urgency of re-establishing the "Middle East Peace Process" towards establishing a Palestinian state. The alliance appears to be preparing to sacrifice Israel to placate the Muslim world in order to save itself facing terrorism.
Following the assassination of Rehavam Zeevi, a member of Ariel Sharon's cabinet, the president of the USA was, as usual urging Israel not to retaliate, while his forces were deploying vast firepower to avenge the attack on the USA.
Those who died on September 11th did not die in Judgment for their sins, as Jesus made clear when asked about the victims of a tower collapse; "Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them--do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish." ( Luke 13 v4-5) . Our Lord's concern is that everyone repents while there is time and opportunity. Sadly, the USA remains self righteous in its indignation and rage. There are no signs of self examination or of considering if September 11th was a call to repent of ungodliness. When Israel was in rebellion against God the nation suffered defeat at the hands of its enemies ( eg. Judges 2 v10-15) Victory only came after repentance. This must still be true. (These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the fulfillment of the ages has come. (1 Corinthians 10 v11) )
America is allowing 4000 abortions a day; one and a half million a year.
America and the West are exporting pornography worldwide.
America leads the Western world in rampant commercialism and consumption.
The Arab world will not have forgotten that the USA alliance killed around 50,000 Iraqi troops with very light losses, in a war about oil. If the Gulf War had been about justice and freedom they would not have been satisfied with regaining Kuwaiti oil but would have removed Saddam Hussein from his tyranny over the people of Iraq and Kurdistan.
Three months later, where did we stand ?
The military and political operation in Afghanistan appears successful, (apart from capturing Osama bin Laden), a new, more liberal, government is being formed in Kabul and terror attacks on the West appear less likely. In Israel the Palestinian terrorists appear to have overplayed their hand in an orgy of bloodshed and the West appears to be happy to leave Arafat to his political fate as Israel moves to contain him. Is that all there is to it? Has the world relaxed back to its pre September 11th state? Have we learned anything?

Pray for the people of the United States and Europe, that they will turn to God for more than just comfort in their distress and success in overcoming terror.
Pray that there will be a Holy Spirit conviction, repentance and revival! (see also Blessing or Curse )
(How can the alliance believe it has God on its side when it is denying the declared will of God concerning his chosen, special people and the land he promised them? )
Pray also for those in bondage to Islam, who believe it is their duty to wage "holy war" against Israel and the West.
This battle is spiritual, but the nations of the Alliance are heavily armed for physical warfare !
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. (Ephesians 6 v12-13)
